Biography
Johnny Hallyday was a French singer and actor, credited with bringing rock and roll to France. Born in Paris in 1943, he was raised by an aunt, and his stage name came from a cousin-in-law, the performer Lee Halliday, who introduced him to American music. Influenced by Elvis Presley, he released his first single in 1960 and built a following with rock and roll sung in French; his adaptation of Let's Twist Again sold over a million copies. Across a 57-year career he released 79 albums, sold more than 110 million records and won ten Victoires de la Musique. He also acted in films, among them Cherchez l'idole (1964), The Specialist (1969), Man on the Train (2002), Crime Spree (2003), The Pink Panther 2 (2009), Vengeance (2009), Salaud, on t'aime (2014), Rock'n Roll (2017) and Titeuf (2011), a voice role. He died in 2017.
