Plot summary
Vadakupatty is a village whose people lived in harmony until a flood carried off their deity, Kannathaal, and drought and famine followed. The villagers hold that the deity still lies buried somewhere on their land, and that a Katteri wanders the village after dark, so they keep indoors at night. Mookaiyan and Kalaiyan lead two rival factions, and each claims it can bring back the deity and rid the village of the Katteri. In the 1960s Ramasamy sells pots at a nearby market and struggles to make a living.
