Plot summary

Portuguese power spans the Indian Ocean in the early 16th century. Vasco da Gama's sailors seize a Muslim pilgrim ship and imprison everyone aboard. The Kothuwal, general of Chirakkal, sends a Brahmin envoy and his son Kelu to ask for the prisoners' release. Gama refuses and sets the ship alight with the captives locked below. The Kothuwal boards the burning vessel to save Kelu and dies there; Kelu escapes. The Tamil Muslim boy Vavvali brings the orphan home and treats him as a brother. From ornaments of the dead, Kelu shapes an urumi and swears to kill Gama.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Urumi (2011)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Screenwriter Shankar Ramakrishnan said he was "nearly imprisoned" in director Santosh Sivan's Mumbai flat for about two months while writing Urumi, which took off once he pitched his one-line idea of a boy who wanted to kill Vasco da Gama.
  • Nithya Menon, who played a Chirakkal princess in Urumi, described the shoot as tedious and the terrain difficult, saying the cast stood in slush almost around the clock and that people got foot infections.
  • Alexx O'Neill, an actor from Connecticut, was cast as Estêvão da Gama but also played the young Vasco da Gama and had to speak only Portuguese, so he hired a coach in Mumbai to get the accent right.
  • Urumi was shot using a combination of formats, with the Canon EOS 5D used extensively, especially for the song featuring Vidya Balan.
  • The women's costumes in the film were stylised rather than historically accurate, director Santosh Sivan said, because women went topless in that era.
