Plot summary

For close to three centuries, Valluvakonathiri has sent warriors known as Chavers to the Mamangam festival at Tirunavaya on the banks of the Bharathappuzha, where they try to bring down the Zamorin. The Zamorin's thirty thousand men usually kill them before they can reach the Nilapaduthara where he sits. In 1695, two from the Chandroth family, Chandroth Panikkar and the twelve-year-old Chanthunni, a master of Kalaripayattu, receive visions from Thirumanthankunnu Devi telling them to go. With the Zamorin's soldiers hunting Chaverukal, the pair finish the customs at their house, take leave of their relatives and slip away, guided by a man named Kungan. Meanwhile Thalachennor, the Zamorin's right-hand man, comes to a brothel kept by the dancer Unnimaya to look into the death of Zamar Koya, a foreigner who mattered to the Zamorin.
