Plot summary
Porinju, Jose and Mariam have known each other since school in Thrissur, when a teacher punished Porinju alone over a fight about Mariam and both boys walked out of the classroom for good. Years later Porinju is a village butcher called Kattalan and a henchman of Iype Muthalali, a wealthy real estate dealer whose sons dislike how close the two men are. Jose dances at the yearly church festival, Mariam lends money, and she is critical of the trouble both friends attract. Porinju proclaims his love for her; she lets it pass. At the festival procession, Iype's grandson Prince harasses Mariam, and Jose beats him and sends him away.
