Plot summary
Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker, a warrior from the Ezhava community in 19th century Travancore, travels to the East India Company headquarters to seek a permit for exporting cardamom. There he watches British officers and nobles force slaves to fight, and he steps in to save a man from being bludgeoned. Back at the palace, the Maharaja of Travancore asks him to hunt down Kayamkulam Kochunni, who took sacred salagram ornaments from Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The Naduvazhi ministers object, since the task has gone to a man of lower caste. Kochunni, meanwhile, plans to dig up the chest of ornaments he hid near the palace. Panicker builds a Shiva temple for lower caste worshipers, and the Diwan orders his arrest.
