Plot summary
Josh Waaka is seventeen and lives in Dunedin in 1981 with Shirley, his English-born widowed mother, and Jamie, his older brother, whose leg injury ended his rugby career. The brothers are of Māori and European heritage. Josh attends St Gilbert's School for Men, where Principal Slane supports the Springboks tour and calls the protests against it unpatriotic. Josh, the only Māori pupil there, wants to act rather than play rugby, and his drama teacher, Brother Madigan, urges him to apply to Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art. Through Samantha, he is drawn into the anti-tour movement.
