Plot summary
Diana Purlow, a scientist, performs experiments on the minds of criminals sentenced to death at a prison run by Warden Earl Blakely, who has objected to her work. The apparatus she built reads minds, and she has tested it on an inmate who insists he is innocent of the murder that put him on death row. She cannot persuade her former lover, the Governor, to cancel that man's execution. Jesse Mowatt, a serial killer, is arrested and condemned to death, and Diana persuades the warden to submit him to her experiment, hoping to uncover the source of his violent impulses.
