Plot summary
Kellogg's has just beaten Post again at the Bowl and Spoon Awards, and Bob Cabana, who heads development at the company's Battle Creek, Michigan headquarters, suspects his rivals have a product coming. Watching two children pull food from Post's dumpsters, he finds the company working on a shelf-stable fruit pastry that has children hooked. Kellogg's learns the idea grew out of work done by Bob's former colleague Donna "Stan" Stankowski, now at NASA, and Bob talks his boss, Edsel Kellogg, into hiring her back. The team brings in taste pilots from other industries to help build its own version. Then Marjorie Post, who runs Post and was once Edsel's lover, gathers the five cereal families and promises her company's pastry will reach shelves within a week.
