Plot summary
Marie teaches English literature at a university in Paris and has been married to Jean for 25 years; they have no children. Each summer they stay in the Landes, where Jean's family owns a house. One afternoon at the beach, Jean goes into the sea for a swim while Marie sunbathes, and she falls asleep. When she wakes, he is gone. There were no witnesses to an accident and no body is recovered, leaving open whether he drowned or took his own life. Back in Paris, Marie refuses to accept that he is dead, and she continues to see him, while those around her grow concerned about her state of mind.
