Plot summary
In the far north of France, Lieutenant Pharaon de Winter is called onto the case of a girl of eleven, raped and murdered on her way from the school bus to her parents' farm. The crime fills him with revulsion. He has lost his partner and his child in an accident, and he lives quietly with his widowed mother. His neighbor Domino invites him to join her and Joseph, her lover, a bus driver. They go to the seaside and to a restaurant, where the reserved Pharaon finds Joseph ignorant and coarse.
