Plot summary

Jeanne, a French writer who researches historical events and biographies, is married and has two children. She is working on a novel drawn from her own memories, and her editor finds the writing cold and without feeling. She can recall nothing from before the age of eight, when a car accident happened. Changes begin to appear in the family home, in the arrangement of furniture, pictures and rooms, and in her own appearance, and she is the only one who notices them. Her husband and children are baffled, and everyone treats her perceptions as a result of fatigue and stress over the book. At her mother's home she finds a photograph of a young girl she believes to be herself, and it moves her to travel to Italy to find a woman.
