Plot summary
Dan, a silent drifter, wakes shirtless in a snowdrift in a stretch of North American forest under localized martial law, where a viral outbreak has reduced people to a rabid, feral state. He gathers his belongings and heads into the woods, and a tranquilizer dart drops him into a trap. It was set by Jack, seven, and his two-year-old sister Brooke, who have turned an isolated cabin into a self-sustaining fortress with a treadmill-powered generator. Jack, his sister's armed protector, takes Dan's gun and knife and offers a deal: finish the maintenance and fortification work on the house, and the weapons come back. Beyond the cabin, feral packs roam and an armed militia led by Brett Carson scours the area for his missing daughter.
