Plot summary

A blast at Ashburn Laboratories in Chicago, run by Dr. Martin Steiner, kills many people. Ten years later the victims linger as remnants: figures that look human and repeat a few actions each day. Veronica Calder, a high school student called Ronnie, eats breakfast beside a remnant of her father, Robert, while her mother ignores him. Then a young man's remnant, Brian, writes run on a mirror and vanishes. Ronnie asks Kirk, a new classmate, to help her find out who Brian is.
