Plot summary

Gennaro is twelve and lives in South Philadelphia with his widowed mother and his grandfather, who is ill and spends the hot summer day of 1933 sitting outside with a quarter clutched in his hand. The quarter is promised to the boy, and Gennaro has plans for it: a ticket to La Paloma, the new movie theater in the neighborhood. Grandpa is not ready to let go of it yet. He has unfinished business with a woman named Guendolina, someone he knew long before, and he asks Gennaro to go to her on his behalf. Gennaro sets out to find another way to raise the money himself.
