Plot summary
David is an American photographer who works on his own, looking for untouched natural settings for a magazine photo shoot. Katia is his Russian girlfriend, unemployed, and she follows him because she loves him. They leave Los Angeles and take a motel room in Twentynine Palms, a small desert town, and spend their days in a sport-utility vehicle, driving the Joshua Tree desert and walking the empty land, sometimes naked. She has little English and he has no Russian, so the two of them use French, a language in which neither feels sure, and much of what they say to each other goes wrong. They make love, they quarrel, they make up.
