Plot summary

Jones Dillon is seventeen when he leaves college and takes a room in an old apartment building, intending to work on his writing there. The neighbors are a kooky set, among them Jane, a photographer with a temper, and Lisa, an aspiring actress who thinks mostly of herself. Jones divides his attention between the two women and flirts with them both while he gets used to living by himself. His alcoholic mother keeps calling with questions, and he writes letters to a father who is absent from his life. A fantasy life he cannot keep in check runs alongside whatever is actually happening to him.
