Plot summary
Billy Bones, a drunken old sailor, takes a room at the inn kept by Jim Hawkins's mother. He drinks heavily, sings pirate songs, keeps watch for seafaring men and fights with old shipmates. Jim gets hold of a map that shows where the pirate Captain Flint left his treasure, and he brings it to Squire Trelawney and Doctor Livesey. The three locate the island on the chart and join a ship commanded by Captain Smollett. News of the map spreads, and the cook, Long John Silver, an ex-pirate who once sailed with Flint, helps bring most of the crew aboard.

- Producer Harry Alan Towers found a boat on the Thames to play the Hispaniola, but it turned out to be a floating restaurant and it sank while being shipped to Spain; director John Hough found a replacement two weeks before filming.
- Orson Welles wrote a Treasure Island screenplay to get his Shakespeare adaptation Chimes at Midnight financed, promising to shoot both films back to back on the same sets and with the same cast for barely more than the cost of one film.
- Orson Welles claimed his performance as Long John Silver was dubbed by another actor without his permission; his own dubbing session, recorded over one long night in Paris, was judged unintelligible.
- Orson Welles turned down offers to make Treasure Island in Greece, saying the country's ruling colonels had locked up many of his friends, and that Spain, his home, was where he preferred to work.
- Welles was so dismissive of the rewrites to his original Treasure Island script that he asked not to be credited, taking the pseudonym "O.W. Jeeves".
