Plot summary
Six hundred years from now, Shaina works as a historian in a world where war, greed, prejudice, poverty, pollution, violence and loneliness are things she has read about in history books. She joins a group traveling back in time for academic research, and an error separates her from the others, depositing her in New York City in 2015, far from the period she was aiming for. Her implement, a small futuristic device resembling a smartphone, is her one means of explaining her situation, and it works only partly. Honesty and generosity are ordinary where she comes from, so she approaches strangers for help expecting them to be good and caring, and is rebuffed again and again.
