Plot summary
James passes his days in a dead-end town drinking and taking drugs with a group of friends, sometimes until he loses consciousness. Sara arrives, a college student who believes drugs will bring her enlightenment. James has been thinking of leaving that life and tries to talk her out of it, without success. As her use grows, Sara fixates on Toad Road, a spot in the forest near York, Pennsylvania, said to hold seven gates that lead to Hell, each gate leaving a person more disoriented than the last. She presses James to take her there, and he agrees to go with her.
