Plot summary
In 1845, Branwell Brontë is dismissed from his post as a tutor, and Anne, working as a governess for the same household, resigns with him. She tells Charlotte and Emily that their brother was sent away over his involvement with the mistress of the house. Their father Patrick is blind and ailing, and the family depends on the parish, so Charlotte dreads a future of financial dependence on Branwell, whose drinking and unruly behavior disturb the household. Charlotte, Emily and Anne all write. When Charlotte finds Emily's poems, Emily is furious at the intrusion, but Anne shares her own poems and a novel. The sisters pay to bring out a volume of poetry as Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, names that keep their sex hidden, and say nothing of it to their father or brother.

- Instead of filming at the real Brontë parsonage in Haworth, the production built a replica of it on the moorland at Penistone Hill Country Park, then added other buildings and a street to recreate how Haworth looked in the Brontës' day.
- Interior scenes had to be shot in studios in Manchester, because filming inside the actual parsonage itself was not possible.
