Plot summary
Rudyard Kipling, the English writer, sits on a War Office propaganda committee when the Great War begins. His only son Jack, seventeen, announces that he means to join the Royal Navy and fight the Germans, and Rudyard encourages him. Bad eyesight fails Jack at the medical examinations for both the Army and the Navy. Determined, Rudyard presses his contacts at the military establishment until Jack is taken on as an officer in the Irish Guards. Jack's mother Carrie and his sister Elsie oppose the posting. Jack trains with the regiment, proves a popular officer with his troops, and is posted to France.

- Exterior scenes were filmed at Bateman's, the 17th-century house that was Kipling's own home from 1902 until his death in 1936, and which is now a National Trust property.
- The four-person "Propaganda Committee" that the film shows is fictionalized, and is based on the real work of Wellington House and of the Admiralty, War Office and Press Committee.
