Plot summary
Two decades in a London East End classroom and ten years in administrative work come to an end when Mark Thackeray retires. He moves to Chicago, where Horace Weaver, a former colleague, is the principal of an inner-city school. The school keeps an A class of good students separate from an H class, the horror class, and Thackeray asks to take the H class. The pupils are noisy and unruly, and he starts with respect, addressing them as Mr or Miss with their surnames and expecting them to call him Sir. Wilsie leads a gang while looking after his younger brother, and Evie conceals a childhood without parents. Another teacher, Louisa Rodgriguez, admires Thackeray.
