Lulu
Biography
Lulu is a Scottish singer, songwriter and actress whose performing career has run for six decades. Raised in Glasgow, she was signed to Decca as a teenager and scored a UK top ten hit in 1964 with her version of the Isley Brothers song Shout. She made her acting debut in To Sir, with Love (1967), singing its theme song, which spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the best-selling American single of that year. Her 1969 Eurovision entry Boom Bang-a-Bang shared first place, and in 1974 she sang the title song for the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun. She hosted her own BBC television series from the late 1960s, had a UK number one in 1993 with Take That on Relight My Fire, and has released fifteen studio albums, including the gold-certified Together (2002). She was appointed an OBE in 2000 and a CBE in 2021.

About the name
Lulu received her stage name at age 14 from future manager Marion Massey, who said she was "a real lulu of a kid."
A first
Lulu and Cliff Richard were the only two performers who sang on Top of the Pops in all five decades that the show ran.
Behind the award
Lulu's song "Boom Bang-a-Bang" won, but three other songs tied with her on 18 votes each, from Spain, the Netherlands and France. The rules were later altered to prevent such ties.
First role
Lulu acted for the first time in the 1967 British film To Sir, with Love, starring Sidney Poitier. She also sang its title song, a major US hit that reached No. 1 and was the country's best-selling single of 1967.
