Plot summary
Leslie, a single mother in West Texas, wins $190,000 in a local lottery and spends it on drink and drugs. Six years on she has nothing, moving between cheap rooms and the street. Put out of a residential motel, she goes to her estranged son James, nineteen now, who lets her move in as long as she keeps off alcohol. He finds liquor bottles under her bed and calls Nancy, an old friend of Leslie's, for help. Nancy and her boyfriend Dutch take her in, then shut her out during the night after she is spotted at the local bar by Pete, a friend of theirs. Leslie sleeps beside a motel, where Sweeney, one of its owners, finds her at dawn and tells her to clear off. She runs, leaving her suitcase behind.

- Because Momentum Pictures did not fund a conventional awards campaign, director Michael Morris and his wife, actress Mary McCormack, organized a celebrity-backed campaign that got Andrea Riseborough nominated for Best Actress; dozens of celebrities praised her publicly, and some hosted screenings during Oscar voting.
- A post on the film's Instagram account drew criticism for possibly violating an Academy rule against singling out the competition by name: it featured critic Richard Roeper, who praised Andrea Riseborough's performance as better than Cate Blanchett's in Tár, a fellow Best Actress nominee.
- The Academy concluded its review of the campaign on January 31, pledging to address social media and outreach campaigning tactics it said caused concern but retaining Riseborough's nomination; no reports said she had engaged in unsanctioned campaigning, and Variety's Clayton Davis and Deadline Hollywood's Pete Hammond both expected the nomination to stand.
