Plot summary
Parliament's armies have won the English Civil Wars, and King Charles I is a prisoner of Thomas Fairfax and his deputy Oliver Cromwell. Denzil Holles leads Parliament, which has drawn up a treaty with the king that promises future liberties. The king is polite to Parliament's leaders but reluctant to sign. The army has not been paid and is restless, and Fairfax's popularity allows him to keep order. The king wants company and asks for Anne, Fairfax's wife, to be permitted to visit, and her family are royalists. Fairfax agrees. At dinner with Cromwell's family, Anne tells her husband she is pregnant.
