Plot summary
Off North Korea, a U.S. Navy submarine is attacked by an enemy boat that carries no sonar signature, and the American craft is badly damaged. Commander Frank Habley loses Tom Palatonio, his executive officer. At Pearl Harbor the Navy refuses to credit Habley's account of the fight, and a court martial seems to finish his career. Then he is offered command of a secret assignment: to tap the communications carried by a cable laid on the seabed between North Korea and mainland China. Tension between the United States and North Korea is climbing. Lieutenant Claire Trifoli, Tom's sister, holds Habley responsible for her brother's death, and she is part of the mission.
