Plot summary
In 1795, the East India Company's officer John Clive kills Mirza Sikander Baig, the Nawab of Raunakpur, and his people are massacred as the kingdom is annexed. Two survive: the Nawab's daughter, Zafira Baig, and his general, Khudabaksh, who raises the girl as his own and trains her in warfare. Eleven years on, Khudabaksh fights under the name Azaad, leading sea-going bandits who trouble Clive's expanding Company. Clive's second-in-command, Captain James Powell, brings in Firangi Mallah, a petty thug from Awadh who sells information for money and dresses as a European, to find Azaad. Firangi courts Suraiyya, a dancer, and turns up disguised at her performance; she exposes him, he is arrested, and the Company's task is given to him.
