Plot summary
In ancient India, sages in the Himalayas encounter the Brahm-shakti, an energy that produces celestial weapons called astras, and they form a secret society to keep the strongest of them, the world-destroying Brahmāstra, out of the wrong hands. In present-day Mumbai, Shiva, a DJ, meets Isha Chatterjee, who has come from London for Durga Puja at her grandfather's pandal, and the two fall for each other. Shiva, an orphan, tells Isha that his mother was killed in a blaze when he was an infant. In Delhi, a scientist who guards a piece of the Brahmāstra is attacked for it. Shiva sees the attack in a vision, and the Agneyāstra bound to his hand links him to powers of fire he cannot yet explain. He and Isha travel to Varanasi to warn the guardian of a second piece.

- Ahead of release, right-wing Hindu nationalists called for a boycott of the film; after an old interview of Ranbir Kapoor saying he liked eating beef resurfaced online, he and Alia Bhatt were stopped from entering the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain by members of the Bajrang Dal.
- After S. S. Rajamouli's father, V. Vijayendra Prasad, proposed some changes to the film to Ayan Mukerji, four days of reshoots were conducted.
- Mukerji posted the teaser for the soundtrack's first single, "Kesariya", on Instagram a day before Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt's wedding on 14 April, as a wedding gift for the couple.
- The film's title logo was unveiled at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Mahashivratri in March 2019, with 150 drones lighting the sky to form the logo and title of the movie.
- Brahmāstra was shown on 5,000 screens in India and 3,000 overseas, an 8,000-screen worldwide total that was the widest release for an Indian film.
- It was the first film released under the Star Studios name, after Disney acquired 21st Century Fox and rebranded Fox Star Studios.
- Before its release, the Delhi High Court issued an interim order restraining eighteen piracy websites from illegally streaming the film online, following a lawsuit filed by Star India.
