Plot summary
Amanda, a wealthy high schooler in Connecticut, euthanizes her crippled horse, using a knife, and is charged with animal cruelty. Her mother pays Lily, an estranged former best friend, to spend time with her. Amanda says an unspecified mental disorder leaves her without emotions. The pair meet again by choice and resume their friendship. Lily resents her stepfather Mark and lives with him and her mother Cynthia. Amanda asks whether Lily has ever considered killing Mark; Lily is upset. Mark enrolls her at a boarding school for girls who have behavioral problems, and after he berates Cynthia, Lily phones Amanda. Lily proposes that Amanda do the killing since she feels no guilt, but Amanda notes her pending trial would make her an obvious suspect. They choose instead to blackmail Tim, a drug dealer, into murdering Mark.
