Plot summary
Daniel Plainview prospects for silver in New Mexico and breaks his leg dragging himself out of the pit. Years later he finds oil in California. After a worker dies in an accident, Daniel takes in the man's orphaned son, H.W., and brings the boy along when he bargains with landowners. Paul Sunday, a young man from Little Boston, tells Daniel about oil beneath his family's farm, and Daniel goes to see the property. There he meets Paul's twin brother Eli, a preacher who knows what the land holds. Eli asks ten thousand dollars for his church in exchange for the farm, Daniel offers five, and a deal is struck. One neighbor, William Bandy, will not sell.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about There Will Be Blood (2007)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Paul Thomas Anderson said the line "I drink your milkshake!" in the final scene was paraphrased from a quote by former Interior Secretary Albert Fall before a Congressional investigation into the 1920s Teapot Dome oil scandal. A 2014 attempt to find the statement in Fall's testimony failed, and a law review article suggested 2003 remarks by Senator Pete Domenici as the real source.
- Anderson wanted a boy from Texas who knew how to shoot shotguns to play Plainview's son, and cast Dillon Freasier after a school principal recommended him. Freasier never read a scene; the filmmakers talked to him instead.
- Producer Joanne Sellar said the film was hard to finance because the studios did not think it had the scope of a major picture, and it took two years to get the money.
- The mansion interiors were filmed at the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, the former real home of Edward Doheny Jr. and a gift from his father, Edward Doheny. Its basement two-lane bowling alley was renovated, and Anderson said only five or six people could fit behind the camera.
- Paul Thomas Anderson asked Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood to score the film after hearing his orchestral piece "Popcorn Superhet Receiver". Greenwood had doubts and nearly backed out, but delivered two hours of music recorded at Abbey Road Studios three weeks after getting a copy of the film.
