Plot summary
An older man holding a welcome sign is waiting at a lonely gas station when a bus lets Andreas off, and he drives him into the city. A job, a furnished apartment and a wife have been arranged for Andreas, who remembers nothing of the journey. The city looks ideal and its residents want for nothing, yet Andreas finds it empty. He appears to be the only person there able to register sensation or emotion, and the only relief the place offers is a pointless materialism. His many questions stir trouble in a city of people who seem content beyond reason.
