Plot summary
In 1945, at a prison camp near Nagasaki, Logan shields a Japanese officer named Yashida from the atomic blast. Decades later, he lives alone in the Yukon, sleeping in a cave, troubled by dreams of Jean Grey, the teammate he killed. Yukio, who can see how people will die, finds him on behalf of Yashida, now the head of a technology company and dying of cancer. Logan flies to Tokyo and meets Mariko, Yashida's granddaughter, and her father Shingen. Yashida offers to move Logan's healing power into his own failing body; Logan refuses and prepares to leave. The next morning Yashida is dead. At the funeral, armed men seize Mariko, and Logan pulls her free, fleeing through Tokyo while his gunshot wounds close too slowly.

- In March 2011 Aronofsky bowed out of directing the film, saying the production would keep him out of the country for almost a year and that he was not comfortable being away from his family for that length of time.
- In August 2012 Guillermo del Toro revealed he had been interested in directing the film, as the Japanese arc was his favorite Wolverine story, but after meeting with Jim Gianopulos and Jackman he passed, deciding he did not wish to spend two to three years of his life on it.
- Jackman said he ate six meals a day in preparation for the role and contacted Dwayne Johnson for tips on bulking up, the suggestion being to gain a pound a week by eating 6,000 calories a day for six months, consisting of “an awful lot of chicken, steak and brown rice”.
- Weta Digital visual effects supervisor Martin Hill said the team built a rig of eight 45-degree angle Red Epic cameras on a van, let a bit of air out of the tires and kept a constant 60 kilometers an hour, then sped the footage up ten times to give the 300 kilometers an hour required.
- The Silver Samurai, rendered by Weta Digital, was based on a model that had been 3D printed and chrome painted using electrolysis, and stunt performer Shane Rangi wore a motion capture suit and stood on stilts while filming as the character.
- The walking bear in the Yukon scenes was created with computer graphics by Weta Digital, while Make-Up Effects Group built a 12-foot-tall animatronic bear that was used for shots of the creature dying after hunters hit it with poisoned arrows.
