Plot summary
In a castle in the Middle Ages, an instrument merchant arrives to sell his wares to Peewit, the court jester. The King throws him out, but a flute with only six holes is left behind, and Peewit pulls it from the ashes of the fireplace. Its music sets anyone who listens dancing until they drop. A man named Matthew McCreep learns of the instrument and steals it from him, then travels the land robbing people with its music. Peewit and Johan, a young knight, ride after him, but McCreep turns the flute on them. Because he is unstoppable while he holds it, Johan seeks out his friend Homnibus, a wizard, whose spell sends the two of them to Smurfland, where the Smurfs agree to make a new flute.

- The film adapts a 1958 Johan and Peewit comic story that was the Smurfs' first appearance in any medium, and, accordingly, the Smurfs themselves do not show up until 35 minutes into the film despite playing a major part.
- Its North American release took US$11 million from a maximum of 432 venues, the highest on record for a non-Disney production until The Care Bears Movie in 1985, and one of Atlantic's all-time top five films.
- The 1975 film's poster billed it as the Smurfs' only full-length motion picture, but a black-and-white compilation feature, Les Aventures des Schtroumpfs, had already come out in Belgium in the mid-1960s and was forgotten.
- The film's success led to the creation of Clubhouse Pictures, the children's film division of Atlantic Releasing, the independent company that presented it in the United States.
