Plot summary
A banjo player in a saloon recounts the tale of the Dalton brothers, Joe, William, Jack and Averell, and how they land in jail once more. There an attorney, Augustus Betting, brings news: their uncle Henry was hanged, and his will leaves them the fortune he built from a lifetime of robbery. The condition is that the brothers must dispose of the judge and the jurors behind Henry's conviction. Henry named Lucky Luke, the one honest man he knew, to travel with them and confirm the work. Should they fail, the money goes to charity. The Daltons break out and give Luke a choice: help them and share the inheritance, or refuse and die.

- René Goscinny died in November 1977, when the film was almost finished. The only scene still missing was the one in which the Daltons dance and sing to Singin' in the Rain.
- On November 4, 1977, the day before his death, Goscinny attended a work session at Studios Idéfix and gave notes on Averell Dalton's chin and Jolly Jumper's saddle. That session was audio recorded and is the last recorded testimony of his life; the public first heard it at a 2017-2018 exhibition.
- It was the first film in which Lucky Luke's horse Jolly Jumper is seen talking, as in the original comics, and the horse is voiced in the French version by the series' writer René Goscinny.
- La Ballade des Dalton was the last Lucky Luke animated film released until Go West! A Lucky Luke Adventure in 2007.
