Plot summary
Franz Berger runs an inn in rural Westphalia and is working to keep it open. Hermann Walzer, a bluff and overbearing man, has taken the dining room for a banquet in honor of his son Mark's wedding. Bad blood exists between the two men. When the shrimp cocktail that should open the meal does not arrive, Hermann leaves with the wedding party and refuses to pay. Franz shuts the door of the loo, keeping the bride and Hermann's wife inside, and locks the estate's outer gates, so Hermann and the rest are left out. Walzer, who hunts pheasant, starts a siege with shotguns, rifles, grenades and a shovel.
