Plot summary
Clemens Forell is a German Wehrmacht soldier taken prisoner by the Soviets in 1945. A court sentences him to twenty-five years of hard labor for crimes against the partisans. He is sent with a large group of prisoners to a camp in Siberia: first a long railway journey across the continent on starvation rations, then a trek on foot into the wilderness. The camp's commander, Lieutenant Kamenev, sets the prisoners to work in the mines. Forell, who knows only a little Russian, has left his wife and children in Germany. He holds on to the wish to be with them again.

- The film is based on the book of the same name by Bavarian novelist Josef Martin Bauer, which was in turn based on the story of Cornelius Rost, who used the alias "Clemens Forell" to avoid retribution from the KGB.
- Much of the film's dialogue is in Russian, Chukchi and Persian rather than German, and at certain points no subtitles are provided on purpose, so the audience shares the helplessness of the main character, who knows only some Russian.
