Plot summary
Mina is a 28-year-old artist in Galway who is asked to take a parrot to a zoo near Belfast. Her car breaks down in a remote forest in western Ireland, and she stumbles upon a bunker where an older woman, Madeline, orders her inside. Madeline has been stranded there with Ciara and Daniel for several months. At night they gather before the bunker's mirrored window as the Watchers appear, mysterious creatures that kill anyone caught outside after dark. Madeline explains the two rules: stay inside the bunker after dark, and never go into the Burrows, the underground passages where the Watchers hide during daylight because they cannot tolerate sunlight.
