Plot summary
Tom, fifteen, leaves London with his parents and his eighteen-year-old sister, Jessie, for a house in rural Devon. His mother is nearing the end of her pregnancy, and his father works in home furniture. When his mother goes into labor, his father drives the family to the hospital, and the car crashes; nobody is badly hurt, and a baby girl is born while his mother is trapped in the car. Back home, Tom comes in through the back door and sees his father and Jessie in the bathtub. He asks Jessie about it, and she behaves as if nothing has happened. At the pub, Jessie introduces him to her boyfriend Nick, and the three of them drive to the beach, where Jessie and Nick leave Tom alone by a fire.
