Plot summary
Carter Page III, a gay man and the son and grandson of powerful men, moves through Washington society as a walker, taking other men's wives to social events instead of their husbands. His manners and connections make him welcome, and nobody regards him as a threat. Among the women he escorts is Lynn Lockner, whose husband, Larry Lockner, sits in the Senate, and who has been seeing a lobbyist in secret. When the lobbyist is found murdered, Lynn asks Carter to cover for her. Agreeing to help draws the attention of the police and an ambitious prosecutor, and Carter begins looking into the killing himself, with his lover Emek Yoglu at his side.

- The Walker was originally conceived as a direct sequel to American Gigolo, bringing back Richard Gere's character Julian Kaye, before director Paul Schrader instead wanted Kevin Kline for the lead.
- Years afterward, writer-director Paul Schrader called The Walker "the most distressing failure" of his career on Facebook, saying it was miscast and that he had wanted openly gay actor Rupert Everett in the lead role instead of Woody Harrelson.
- Woody Harrelson's character Carter Page III was modeled on real-life Washington socialite Jerry Zipkin, the man for whom the term "walker" was actually coined.
