Plot summary
Robert and Maia, husband and wife, leave London for the house where Maia spent her childhood, after her father's death and other tragedies in the family. The attic holds an old portrait, and the man in the painting has Robert's face. The resemblance is exact, and Robert wants to know who he was. The painting offers no name beyond the visitor, so Robert starts tracing the identity of his double, and his questions reach into Maia's family and the house they have come back to. Where the visitor appeared, deaths followed, a pattern that has Robert digging further into what the family has kept out of sight.
