Rosalind Ivan

Biography

Rosalind Ivan was an English actress who built her reputation on the stage before working in American films. On the London stage she played Retty in Tess in 1900, then joined Sir Henry Irving's company and appeared in America as Mme. Thalhouet in Madame Sans Gene in 1902. Her first Broadway part came in The Master Builder, and her final one was in The Corn Is Green in 1940. She had a stage triumph in A Fool There Was in 1913. From 1944 to 1954 she made fourteen American films. She was memorable as a bank teller's nagging wife in Fritz Lang's Scarlet Street (1945), and a similar role opposite Charles Laughton in Robert Siodmak's The Suspect (1945) led some in Hollywood to nickname her Ivan the Terrible. She played Mrs. Benson, Peter Lorre's comical landlady, in The Verdict (1946), and also appeared in the Biblical epic The Robe. Her fame came mainly from Broadway and London stage work.
