Plot summary
News reaches Harold Fry at the home he shares with his wife Maureen in Kingsbridge, in south Devon: Queenie Hennessy, who once worked with him, is dying of cancer in a hospice far to the north. He writes a letter but judges it an unworthy gesture and cannot bring himself to post it. In a garage shop, the attendant says her encouragement helped an aunt of hers fight cancer. Harold telephones the hospice, asking that Queenie be told he intends to walk to Berwick, and that she must hold on until he arrives. Realizing he is not coming back, Maureen is worried at first; when he calls with his plan she is angry. She tells a neighbor that she fears he has walked out on their marriage. After days of walking, Harold sees visions of his son David.
