Plot summary

Ratso stages city shows that go badly and still means to become a celebrated showman. His assistant is a worm called Wesley, billed as the world's longest worm, threaded through a straw. Ratso plans to take him to a carnival run by his pen-pal cousin Ernie, though Phillis and her two brothers are after him. A train ride lands them in a bird's nest as an egg hatches, and Wesley ends up stuck in a tequila bottle. Ratso lands in a poultry yard with the egg, and when the birds accuse him of stealing it, he says it is his and that a duck in the yard was his wife. Daphne, a friendly duck, speaks for him. The egg hatches a bird with bushy gray wings; the yard takes it for a duckling, and it treats Ratso as its parent.
