Plot summary
In 1962, a con man named Chester MacFarland is touring Greece with his wife Colette. At the Acropolis in Athens they meet Rydal Keener, an American who works as a tour guide and runs small scams of his own. Drawn to Colette and impressed by the couple's money, he agrees to join them for dinner. Rydal returns to their hotel to give back a bracelet Colette left in the taxi. A private detective hired by people Chester swindled has come to the room demanding money, and the detective is left dead on the floor. Chester says the man attacked him. Rydal helps move the body, and the three leave the hotel quickly, their passports still at the front desk. Rydal arranges false papers and suggests they wait in Crete.
