Plot summary
After his mother Caroline dies, Rob Horton and his father move into the Kentucky Star, a motel in Lister, Florida. A rash on Rob's legs keeps him out of school, though it is not contagious, and his father sets him to chores. Willie May, the motel's maid, tells him the rash might come from sadness. One morning Rob comes across a caged tiger in the woods, and the motel's owner, Beauchamp, pays him to feed it. Sistine Bailey, a new classmate from Philadelphia who insists her father will soon take her away, wants the tiger freed. Rob worries what Beauchamp would do if it were.
