Alice Pearce
Biography
An American actress who began as a nightclub comedienne, Alice Pearce later performed on Broadway. Born in New York City, she studied drama at Sarah Lawrence College and graduated in 1940. Gene Kelly brought her to Hollywood for the 1949 film adaptation of On the Town, where she repeated her stage role from the show's initial Broadway run. Critics and the public responded warmly to her comic work. Further movie parts and Broadway appearances followed, and in the 1953 to 1954 season she was a regular on ABC's Jamie. In 1964 she declined the Grandmama role in The Addams Family, then joined Bewitched as the nosy neighbor Gladys Kravitz. Her character's alarmed reactions to the witchcraft across the street ran through many early episodes. She stayed with Bewitched until 1966 and was replaced by Sandra Gould, and she received a posthumous Emmy for her supporting work in a comedy series.
