Plot summary
Governor Dean Redding is preparing a run for the presidency and wants Laina Michaels beside him to quiet the controversy over the Thinning, the school aptitude test that enforces population control. Laina refuses at first, then teacher Ms. Cole and Jack, a security guard at Assuru Global, persuade her to accept so she can earn Redding's trust from inside his campaign. Blake Redding failed the test on purpose and is believed dead by the public; he is instead held at a labor facility where failed students the government calls the Worthy manufacture Assuru Global products. Ellie Harper is there too, and the two pick up the relationship they left behind. Blake looks for a way out for both of them.
