Plot summary
Elena draws men to her with her beauty and uses it to tempt and hold them. She is married to the Marquis de Torre Bianca, a Frenchman and a close friend of Manuel Robledo. Robledo is an engineer from Argentina, in Paris on a break from the dam he has been building at home. A middle-aged banker, Fontenoy, has also been her lover. When Elena travels to Argentina, Manos Duras, a bandit there, falls for her as Robledo has.

- MGM executive Louis B. Mayer was so depressed by the film's ending that he ordered an alternate, happier ending to be shot; theaters could then choose which version to screen based on their own audience's tastes.
- Mauritz Stiller, originally hired to direct Greta Garbo's second MGM film, was removed from the production after struggling within the Hollywood studio system and replaced by Fred Niblo.
