Armand Kaliz

Biography

Armand Kaliz was an American actor who started out in vaudeville and on the legitimate stage before a long run in the movies. Born in Warsaw, Poland, he was a vaudeville headliner, and he reached the United States in 1907, the year of his Broadway debut in The Hoyden. He returned to Broadway in The Kiss Burglar in 1918 and Spice of 1922, then moved into films, working in silent pictures and in early sound films of the 1930s. Among his screen credits was The Temptress (1926), with Greta Garbo, and he made around 82 films from 1917 to 1941. After 1933, most of his small roles went uncredited. He died in 1941.

A United Press article from 1939 called Kaliz one of the West's top wholesale liquor dealers. He entered the business after Prohibition ended, when he worked as a wine taster for an importer.

Kaliz made his Broadway debut in The Hoyden in 1907, the same year he arrived in the United States from Southampton aboard the S/S St. Louis.
